VDI AS A SERVICE: HPE ENHANCES SimpliVity

0

The new version of HPE SimpliVity 325 Gen 10 supports twice as many desktops but should only cost half as much as its predecessor. In addition, HPE Nimble Storage HCI will enable virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) as a service as part of GreenLake in the future.

HPE is giving a major update to its hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) solution, HPE SimpliVity. In combination with HPE Nimble Storage HCI as a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) as a service, home office workplaces should have a solid basis in times of COVID-19.

The improved HPE SimpliVity 325 Gen 10 is equipped with the new 2nd generation AMD EPYC processor and saves 50 percent in costs per virtual desktop. With only one height unit, the space requirement and energy consumption are low. HPE SimpliVity 325 Gen 10 is designed to reduce the time to deploy, manage, and scale VDI.

The Simplivity offering is complemented by the storage solution HPE Nimble Storage HCI as a virtual desktop infrastructure, which has been available since 2019 but is now available as a service (PaaS) via HPE Greenlake. Nimble Storage HCI now offers increased scalability and supports advanced HPE ProLiant server models with the new 2nd generation AMD EPYC processor. This enables virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and virtual machines as-a-service with a pay-as-you-go model.

Knowledge workers can reliably run Microsoft Office and their other workplace solutions on this platform’s hyper-converged platform. There is the same desktop experience on any device from any location, while the VDI system is managed from a central server.

Migros Ticaret, the Turkish subsidiary of the Swiss grocery chain Migros, has already implemented HPE SimpliVity for VDI. Murat Zobu, the retailer’s systems, and cloud infrastructure manager, relies on the HCI solution for backup and disaster recovery but lately appreciates flexibility and scalability. “We originally deployed 300 virtual desktops and had to add 700 more to give our employees the flexibility to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. With HPE SimpliVity, we could do this in just 12 minutes.”

“Our experience with HPE SimpliVity has been incredible, especially with our large SQL databases, file servers, and virtual desktops. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, we allowed most of our enterprise users to work from home and doubled the number of concurrent VDI users overnight without impacting performance. The new HPE SimpliVity 325 in a 1U form factor helps VDI environments like ours get the best performance and availability in an extremely small footprint. With the HPE Nimble Storage HCI, we can reduce our operational costs by 50 percent.”

Another satisfied user is Rob Collins, Head of Infrastructure and Service Management at PetSure: “With HPE Nimble Storage HCI, we can now offer our 380+ VDI users and 400+ sales reps a superior VDI solution,” said Rob Collins, Head Infrastructure and service management at PetSure. “In the past, we have used AWS for our VDI workloads, but we found it cost-prohibitive. HPE Nimble Storage HCI can reduce our operational costs by 50 percent, improve our performance by 2x for our VDI workloads, and achieve 50 percent faster application delivery.”

Patrick Osborne, VP and General Manager of HPE SimpliVity, states, “As an edge-to-cloud platform-as-a-service company, HPE exists to help our customers bring together the right expertise and technology solutions to power them to meet the most immediate challenges and unexpected demands. Faced with these challenges, customers want to unleash mobile productivity and desktop virtualization quickly, and the HPE SimpliVity and Nimble Storage HCI solutions offer our customers performance and flexible payment options,”

HPE Financial Services support today’s HCI offerings for VDI. In uncertain times, HPE SimpliVity and Nimble HCI customers can use it to defer payments for up to 180 days to conserve liquidity.

The HPE SimpliVity 325 Gen10 with the new AMD EPYC processor can now be ordered worldwide directly and through sales partners and is expected to ship at the end of May 2020.

HPE GreenLake is now available globally for HPE Nimble Storage HCI. The expanded server support, scalability, and one-click software upgrade enhancements will be available worldwide directly and through channel partners in the second half of 2020.

HPE not only relies on its strengths but has also been cooperating with Nutanix, Simplivity’s main competitor, since 2019. In October 2019, the two jointly developed products GreenLake for Nutanix appeared as a hybrid cloud-as-a-service offering and the server ProLiant DX.
